Valuation
What a YouTube channel is actually worth
· 6 min read
Ask ten people what a channel is worth and you will get ten multiples of ten different numbers. The reason is that most of them are valuing the wrong thing: the audience, which is a proxy, instead of the money, which is the evidence.
Revenue is evidence; subscribers are a proxy
A subscriber count tells you how many people once pressed a button. Monthly revenue tells you what the channel earns while nobody is watching it. When a seller declares a revenue figure, InfuMarket's valuation weights it at roughly seventy per cent against thirty for audience size — not because audience does not matter, but because one of those two numbers can be checked against a payout statement and the other cannot.
That weighting is also why declaring revenue narrows the estimated range from about thirty-five per cent either side of the midpoint to about twenty-five. A tighter range is not a better number. It is a more confident one.
What each input actually moves
- Subscribers set the base. Every subscriber is worth a small, flat amount before any multiplier touches it.
- Platform adjusts for how transferable and how monetisable the audience is.
- Niche adjusts for what an advertiser pays to reach it. Finance and tech audiences are worth several times a general-entertainment audience of the same size, and that is not a judgement about the content.
- Monetisation is the single largest multiplier on the audience half of the formula. A channel that is already approved for payouts removes the buyer's biggest unknown.
- Average views carry the engagement signal. A million subscribers who watch nothing are a mailing list nobody opens.
Every one of those appears as a line in the breakdown under your estimate, with the multiplier it applied. If you disagree with the number, you can point at the row that caused it — which is the only honest way to publish a formula.
What the estimate is not
It is arithmetic over figures you typed. Nobody has opened the channel, checked a strike history, confirmed that the account can legally be transferred, or verified a single number. Two channels with identical inputs can sell months and lakhs apart because one of them has a clean copyright record and the other does not.
Treat the range as the opening position in a negotiation, not as an appraisal. What a channel sells for is whatever one particular buyer will pay on one particular day — and the way to move that number is to make it easy for them to verify what you have claimed.
